Chicken Curry

Tue May 19, 2009, 3:42 PM
So today was that luncheon at the La Jolla Country Club with the La Jolla Literary Society.
I'd never heard of Pico Iyer, and I'll be honest, I was kind of disappointed because I knew I'd get to hear an author speak, and I was just downed because I'd never even heard of this guy.
Well I looked him up, and he was going to speak about his latest book called The Open Road, and it's about the Dalai Lama.
I was like, okay, I don't even know if i CARE about the Dalai Lama.

Well, all preconceptions put aside, Pico Iyer's lecture/speech (it seems wrong to call it so, he was very engaging) was, as I have stated parenthetically, very engaging, and interesting, and inspiring if you would believe it.
All the attendees receieved a pre-signed copy of his book, and I'm excited to read it.

After his speech and the Q&A following, we got to meet him ourselves and take pictures, and he wrote an inscription in my copy of his book. It was exciting, to say the least.
He seems a very interesting person, and kind, and very conversational.

I also got to meet with the first place winner. Her name is Jennifer, and I tried to find her on facebook, like I promised I would, but there are a lot of Jennifers /: I do know her last name, but I'm not sure how safe it would be disclose that here, or if she would appreciate that.
Her story was really good! It was about the love of writing, and it really hit home. I realize that's kind of a lame expression, but what she wrote, I felt it. And that's a lot.
The other second-place winner (because there are only first and second place, but this year they thought that both of us deserved to win) is named Valentino. His story was sci-fi. Sci-fi isn't really my genre of choice, so I probably can't appreciate his story as much as I'd like, but it did have excitement to it.

When we got to the Country Club, and we were sitting at our tables, with a booklet that held copies of the winning stories, and I was reading them,
I realized again how incredible it is that I actually won.
And congratulations to the other winners also, Jennifer and Valentino.
I'm as proud of you guys as I am of myself, even more proud I dare say (:

Today was a good day (:
